Perching right on the banks of the canal, The Waterway lays claim to one of London’s best alfresco spots. Three decked terraces overlook the water; come early to nab a table as they go like hot cakes when the sun peeks from behind the clouds. Inside is a smart dining room serving a huge selection of breezy international dishes, from grilled halloumi, fig and watercress salad with truffled honey vinaigrette, to roast pheasant with braised bacon, barley and whiskey cream sauce. Given the unmatched setting and guaranteed crowds, prices are high: bank on paying in excess of £4 for pints of Staropramen, bottles of Corona or 175ml glasses of house white. However, with The Waterway's 'quality' menu, 'buzzy' atmosphere and 'quick, efficient' service, nobody in affluent Maida Vale and Notting Hill seems to mind.
