Square Meal review of The Criterion:
Despite being right in the heart of Piccadilly Circus & serving its fair share of tourists, Marco Pierre White’s Criterion is still one of the capital’s most elegant eateries. Its glittering Byzantine ceiling, gilt fittings, well-spaced tables & peach-tinted mirrors create a congenial setting in which to sample the predominantly French menu. There’s French toast with wild mushrooms & duck confit with braised red cabbage, plus a few best-of-British dishes (fish & chips, chicken & leek pie) thrown in for good measure. You could go crazy on the French-heavy wine list but, commendably, there are some good options by the glass & a fair few bottles under £25. A humbler set-lunch & pre-theatre menu (at £14.95/17.95 for two/three courses) is a more wallet-friendly way to enjoy the glam surrounds.
