Square Meal Review of Zilli Fish ?

It’s not without supporters, but Aldo Zilli’s Soho ristorante can feel a bit woeful when it’s less than half-full. Take a window seat, & consider getting straight into the signature lobster spaghetti – a huge bowlful generously laced with prized Scottish crustacean flesh. If a starter is required, try squid – perhaps deep-fried with garlic crisps or char-grilled with red pepper salsa. The quality of the cooking is decent, & there’s plenty of choice for seafood fans, although the set menu (from £15.90) is perplexingly low on fish. Otherwise, a dedicated vegetarian chef knocks out terrific quinoa salads, mushroom risotto, veggie burgers & the like. Tiramisu is said to be homemade but it’s a generic-tasting wodge. Next-door Zilli Café now does aperitivi, & there’s even talk of a pop-up grappa bar.

I was really disappointed about the set meal in spite of celebrated chefs restaurant. There was not many choice. I can't say it was delicious, but the tast is the norm.
    The wine was quite expensive.

Having heard many good things about Zilli Fish I looked forward to my lunch there with a former colleague. It was a Thursday and the restaurant was almost empty. Well under 50% occpancy and this failed to create any sort of positive atmosphere.

I began the meal with Calamari and sweet chilli sauce. It was OK for a cheaper chain reastaurant but certainly did not delight the palate. For my main course I opted for what the menu described as Merluzzo Tempura. Fish and chips to you and me. The fish, Icelandic Cod, was certainly meaty but was a little too moist inside and could have done with a little more cooking. My friend had the mixed fish salad and commented that it was sad to see, what was probably a very good piece of fish spoiled in terms of both texture and flavour.

We declined desert and the fairly simple meal accompanied by a bottle of house white wine came to £110. It was certainly not value for money.

The location is excellent but I think the occupancy level shoud have given us a warning of what was to come. In total, it was very disappointing when compared to some of the other restaurants that specialise in fish and seafood.

Not at all impressed after visiting on a Friday Night. Poor service with poor quality food, the calamari was way oversalted although this was deducted from the final bill. The decour is more of a cafe than a restaurant. Given that the wonderful Randall and Aubin has crowds lining up all night just down the road one would think Zilli Fish would be a bit more than it is given the name on the door. Maybe we hit a bad night…maybe not.

Popped round for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The place was nearly empty (just 3 tables occupied), and the service was incredibly slow (although they served focaccia and olive oil immediately the rest had to be waited for painfully long). The three of us were placed at a tiny table hardly enough for three people, and despite being seated right in the middle of the restaurants, all 4 waiters seemed to be carefully avoiding us. Starters were ok (goat cheese on portobello mushroom was nice, but I would agree with the previous reviewer that calamari were like rubber), black cod was nicely done but monkfish was a bit dry and bland, and pasta with clams (smallest clams I ever saw) was very average. Banoffee pie had too much gelatine in it and tasted like off-the-shelf supermarket dessert. Overall, OK if you're very hungry after a long exhausting walk (like we were), but overpriced and not worth a repeat visit.
Oh, and the toilets are awful.

Having heard good things about Zilli Fish, I left feeling like maybe I'd been in the wrong restuarant. The whole place looked and felt dirty (including the staff), the service was incredibly slow despite the place being half empty, the waiter kept dropping things on the floor (twice he dropped cutlery he was cleaning and put it back on a table ready for the next customer… lovely!) and most important the food was very average. The calamari was very rubbery and definitely not fresh, I chose the lobster as a main and at £26 expected it to be good, but it was covered in too much butter and again quite rubbery. At this point we decided against dessert and left and won't be going back! If you want good fish, try Fishworks instead!
