The gothic architecture of a former bank adds gravitas to Zaika’s brand of high-end Indian cuisine, now overseen by Jasbinder Singh (protégé of Atul Kochhar & one-time chef to the Dalai Lama). The Bedouin-style bar is perfect for an aperitif before launching into the ambitious assortment of traditional & more radical dishes on offer – perhaps a trio of chicken nibbles (each with a different marinade), mustard-tinged tandoori guinea fowl with a chilli consommé or crispy soft-shell crab with smoked chilli jam, black salt & tamarind mayonnaise. Elsewhere, evergreens such as slow-cooked rogan josh are satisfyingly rich & served in small copper pans. High prices extend to the wine list, & service can falter (‘breathtakingly rude’, moaned one reader). Meanwhile, a dessert of silky chocolate mousse with masala-tea ice cream & chocolate samosas points up the kitchen’s sense of fun.
