Square Meal review of Yumi:
Overpriced & in a need of refurbishment is the general consensus on this Japanese restaurant on a quiet road off Baker Street. Yumi’s menu proclaims that ‘the way to a man’s heart is through one’s cooking’, but with a cover charge of £2.50 & set menus starting at £39, a heart attack when the bill arrives is more likely. That said, the food is good: highlights include grilled mango topped with rice cake & miso paste or grilled scallop wrapped in nori seaweed. It’s also worth investigating the homemade ice-creams with flavours such as yuzu, sesame or red bean. The basement restaurant is starting to look a little ragged & the atmosphere can be muted; more fun can be had upstairs at the lively sushi bar. In a nutshell: good food, but there’s better value to be had elsewhere.
