Wodka is poles apart from most of its Eastern European competitors. The setting – a former dairy in a pretty corner of Kensington – is captivating, prices are reasonable & service from platinum-blonde waitresses is generally polished. The menu takes in a solid mix of dishes, from the familiar to the obscure. Pierogi – dumplings filled with mushy potato, cheese & spring onion – makes a comforting starter. Portions are generous – dill & beetroot-marinated gravad lax comes with two great hunks of potato latke while, to follow, beef & sausage goulash is served from an iron pot with a dollop of sour cream – but dishes are not nearly so heavy as they sound. Just as well, for the proof of the kitchen’s skill is in the puddings: a sour cherry creme brulee that’s full of flavour or the nutty delight of hazelnut ice-cream with hot chocolate sauce, washed down by a jammy home-infused strawberry vodka.

One of the few places I really like to eat in London. Most places you tend to over-pay for sometimes decent but generally fairly uninteresting food. At Wodka you get excellent quality, unique food, prepared to very high standards in a cozy, but pretty chic environment. The prices are pretty reasonable too. The pierogies are to die for, and the vodka selection is, obviously, excellent. I once had a schnitzel there (yes, probably not standard East European fare, but great nonetheless) which was hands down the best I've had anywhere, including Germany. Sadly, it wasn't there the next time I went as the menu changes frequently, which is a good thing. I'll go back anytime.
