Square Meal review of Winter Garden:
Housed in a vast glass-roofed atrium dotted with palm trees, this grandiose hotel restaurant feels like it could have been transported directly from Kew Gardens. The light, airy space is filled with the tinkle of piano, while courteous staff sashay among the comfy chairs & sofas, serving a mix of wealthy hotel guests & business folk. Such a refined setting does not come cheap, however, with the evening menu featuring simple, well-balanced dishes at top-end prices. The quality of cooking is good. A starter of crab risotto with ginger & coriander was a fragrant delight while pan-fried sea bass with citrus & dill sauce was cooked perfectly. A set lunch (two/three courses £30/£35) offers better value, but the choice is less interesting, with cod & chips competing with braised pork belly. The hotel also has a following for its afternoon teas & Sunday Champagne brunches, when there’s unlimited Taittinger poured to a soundtrack of live jazz.
