Is it a restaurant? Is it a bar? Is it a shop? Villandry is all these things, & that little bit more. After gawping at the stunning display of cheeses & charcuterie in the foodstore/deli at the front, venture to the airy, modern dining space to the side. The no-fuss French food is largely sourced from the ingredients available in the deli – expect dishes of pea soup with Bayonne ham & rarebit topped with bleu d’Auvergne, a stonking charcuterie platter & poached salmon with mayonnaise & a Secrett’s Farm salad. Flavours are good & honest, even if the cooking sometimes lacks a delicate touch, while the wine list features some quirky little numbers along with the usual suspects from Bordeaux, Burgundy & Chianti. The only fly in Villandry’s ointment is that service can be ‘slow & forgetful’.
