Square Meal review of La Trouvaille:
Upstairs at this Carnaby corner spot are a couple of pale & interesting dining rooms with see-through chairs, Venetian mirrors & silvery banquettes, the only splashes of colour coming from the window boxes. It’s a suitably quirky setting for an adventurous menu that puts an inventive spin on classic French cooking. Start, perhaps, with tuna sashimi with vanilla dressing & smoked garlic puree, & follow with Herdwick mutton with crushed coco beans or veal with a squid & crayfish sauce. Puds might include banana bavarois with guava coulis. Organic ingredients are used wherever possible while the French wine list features some biodynamic options. Downstairs is a more casual lunchtime bistro that becomes a wine bar by night.
Wine List: This cracking selection concentrates on wines from south & south-west France, with some extremely rare older vintages of iconic producers like Mas de Daumas Gassac. Terrible translation of the tasting notes from French gives rise to numerous typos & moments of high comedy – our favourite: ‘It slide silkily across your palate without analysis’ – however this only seems to add to the charm of the place. Best Buy White 2006 Alain Brumont Gros Manseng, Cotes de Gascogne, France, £17.50. Best Buy Red 2002 Domaine Mathieu Cosse ‘Le Combal’, Cahors, France, £30.
