Londoners may have lapped up the recent wave of trendy new steakhouses, but well-liked Sophie's remains effortlessly cool with its low-hanging light bulbs, bare brickwork and cosy booths. A no-bookings policy means queues at the bar on busy nights, although an excellent chilli martini should take the edge off the wait. While steak is the main draw, Sophie's has always been about offering lighter alternatives, so perhaps kick things off with some grilled king prawns with chilli and garlic. To follow, you can't beat a thick, flame-licked porterhouse to share, served with crisp, fluffy fries and a selection of sauces, before rounding off with a superb chocolate fudge brownie. The easily priced wine list keeps things simple, with house red at £15.95.
