‘Real Italian food with real Italian ingredients served by great staff’, trumpeted one reader after a visit to chef-patron Riccardo Giacomini’s classic & passionately run restaurant. Even its hideaway location down a quiet alley near Shad Thames has not deterred fans over the past decade. Secluded mezzanine tables are coveted for the view over the dining room, while exposed brick & Caravaggio-red walls hung with artwork complete the quintessential ‘smart Italian’ look. The kitchen’s dedication to good things in their true season shows in, say, a refreshing asparagus soup with truffle & duck egg, handmade pappardelle with rabbit & black olive sauce or roast cod fillet with baby artichokes & lobster sauce. Portions are healthy, but save room for puddings such as a fascinating iced Grand Marnier soufflé with orange sauce. Service is warm & boisterous, & the all-Italian wine list is imaginatively chosen. A hidden gem.
