Rex Whistler’s weird & wonderful mural led to Tate Britain’s restaurant being dubbed ‘the most amusing room in Europe’ when it launched in 1927. The strange lands & mythical beasts that populate the artwork certainly draw the eye, but diners’ attentions soon revert back to the expertly rendered plates of modern British food & the fantastic wine list. The kitchen does its bit for regional producers, serving Colchester rock oysters, Devon beef & fish from the Newlyn day-boats as well as the likes of Rosary goats’ cheese & spinach ravioli with wild-garlic pesto or lamb rump with minted broad-bean purée. The set-lunch menu is a hit with arty types, civil servants & business executives, while gallery-goers are delighted to discover that the top-notch afternoon tea only costs £7.45.
