As you might expect from a restaurant attached to Tate Britain, there’s plenty to catch the eye in this visually striking room – not least a gigantic Rex Whistler mural, ‘The Expedition in Pursuit of Rare Meats’, which recounts an imaginary trek through a strange, surreal landscape. Art lovers, business diners & tourists are also impressed by the expertly wrought food & award-winning wine list. Despite the exotic theme of the mural, most of the kitchen’s inspiration comes from close to home with a succession of unfussy, seasonally attuned lunch dishes. In April, for example, you might kick off on a rich note with Cornish crab cocktail (which could have done with more crab & less sauce), before sampling tender spring chicken atop baby vegetables & morels. Conclude with old-school puds such as spotted dick or apple & rhubarb crumble. Breakfast & afternoon tea are good here too.

Wine List: Only open at lunch, the Tate is one of the few establishments to cellar wine. This, coupled with remarkably restrained margins, make for compelling bargains. France, Italy & Australia are the highlights & with more than 80 available in halves, this is the place to experiment. Best Buy White 2006 Bourgogne Blanc, Domaine Ramonet, Burgundy, France, £27. Best Buy Red 2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, Rhône Valley, France, £35.

There's no doubt that Whistler's mural is the real star of the show at Tate Britain's subterranean restaurant. The mural covers 3/4 of the walls and is very impressive; if conversation fails with your fellow diners, then there's certainly plenty to look at. Nevertheless, the food is of a high standard and the set lunch menu, incredibly good value.
The restaurant was packed at lunch today; while the last few days of the Turner exhibition might have been responsible for the number of customers, it's obviously somewhere you need to book. All the dishes we sampled were well executed and you could easily work your way through three courses. The prawn and crayfish cocktail starter did look a little retro, but disappeared soon enough and mains of squash ravioli and duck cassoulet were well seasoned and not at all heavy. The apple and rhubarb crumble would have benefited from a few more minutes in the oven (be warned, this dessert does take some time). However, the sticky toffee pudding rated as “one of the best” although a dash of cream or ice-cream wouldn't have gone amiss. If you're coming to the Tate and fancy something a little more substantial that what's on offer in the cafe, then this is definitely worth a look.
