Square Meal review of Rex Whistler Restaurant:
Originally designed as a directors’ dining room, the restaurant at Tate Britain pulls in the suits at lunchtime thanks to a suitably businessy setting, while its stunning Rex Whistler wall mural & justly famed wine list create a real sense of escape. Thanks to fair pricing of both food & wine, the place is always busy. The menus are scrupulously seasonal, with well-executed dishes ranging from a fresh, summery cucumber soup, through to the more rustic likes of Gressingham duck with braised gem lettuce & broad bean veloute. Tempting daily specials – ours was an excellent poached lobster with pea sprout salad & caviar creme fraiche – add further interest, while some of the indulgent puds (the delicious spiced rice pudding among them) also make their way on to the afternoon tea menu.
Wine List: The Tate has been a destination for wine lovers since the 70s. The classic areas of Burgundy, Bordeaux & the Rhone continue to form the mainstay of the list, although there are some great old buys from Italy & Australia, with mark-ups well below the capital’s standard. There are 10 wines by the glass & over 80 halves – probably the country’s biggest collection. Best Buy White 2004 Rully 1er Cru Margotés, Vincent Dureuil-Janthial, Burgundy, France, £26. Best Buy Red 2000 Chateau Paveil de Luze, Margaux, Bordeaux, France, £30.
