Square Meal review of Sugar Reef:
A recent refurb has sexed up Sugar Reef. The cane chairs have retired to the great conservatory in the sky & in their place is flock fabric & leather, chandeliers & velvet curtains. The menu is less sophisticated – spring rolls, steak bearnaise & baked cheesecake – served by charming & enthusiastic staff. The batter on tempura prawns was more fish & chips than Japanese restaurant, but lamb rump was perfectly pink, & the fajitas filled with a nicely smoky meat & veg. The pricing policy means it’s cheaper to eat at the start of the week (Mon-Weds £12/15 for two/three courses; Thurs-Fri £16/20; Sat £20/25), so if you’re not bothered about atmosphere, it’s a steal. Glam purple walls with grand silver stencils entice the office parties & hen nights to the bar & club below.
