One of London’s best-kept alfresco secrets, lit by gas lamps & seemingly a million miles from the bustle of St James’s, L’Oranger’s terrace occupies part of the capital’s smallest square. Not
that the dining room’s warm-toned luxury is any sort of hardship; expansive mirrors & vibrantly patterned carpets blend with the original panels & architrave very satisfyingly. The kitchen
delivers carefully composed plates of Provençal sunshine – think lobster perched on a Technicolor confit of peppers & grapefruit, silver tureens brimming with basil-flecked gazpacho, or whole
pigeon roasted over baby fennel, tomatoes, grapes & radishes.Desserts are often more playful, with strawberry ‘milkshake’ poured onto Gariguette strawberries & sablé biscuits, followed
swiftly by hot chocolate sauce. Prices can seem high, but you need to factor in generous canapés, amuse-bouches, pre-desserts & a towering platter of breads; otherwise stick to the £29.50 set
lunch.
WINE LIST: Lucio Penetra has put together a classic French list to match L’Oranger’s Provençal flavours. Strong on Burgundy & Bordeaux, but the real bargains are found elsewhere in
France, such as Jura & the Rhône. BEST BUY WHITE 2003 Domaine Jean Rijckaert, Les Sarres, Savagnin, Côtes du Jura, France, £45. BEST BUY RED 2007 Domaine Château de Curson,
Crozes-Hermitage, Rhône Valley, France, £46.
