Synonymous with high living since it opened in 1906, The Ritz’s bijou cocktail lounge is also unmistakably rooted in the 1920s. The decor – all onyx, Lalique glass, exotic woods, gilt & leopard print chairs – is certainly ‘ritzy’, & service is as polished as the room’s camphor wood surrounds. Meanwhile, liquid grandees such as Prince of Wales martini, Mr President & Ritz tango (Calvados, sloe gin, elderflower cordial & lime juice) can’t be faulted – although at around £19, they are simply too steep. The same can be said of Champagne, Tiger beer (£9.50 a bottle) or a pairing of 50g of farmed Bulgarian beluga caviar with a pour of Kauffman Luxury vodka at a wincing £779 a go. Scions of Qatar & Moscow, EuroMillions winners & movie icons apply within.
