Everyone has an opinion about Riva, whether a past customer or not. Fans tend to be regulars & celebrities, wooed by proprietor Andrea Riva’s charm. They generally leave the choice of dinner to the great man, who will match the best dishes in the kitchen to the mood of his most favoured clients. But unless newcomers are famous, or have another way to gain access to the warmth of il padron, they can be left out in the cold until they’ve shown loyalty to the restaurant. Given that prices are higher than in many neighbouring establishments, & that the surroundings (a small, trattoria-like space) & cooking (northern Italian classics like roast suckling pig or lamb, plus a forte in seafood such as crab ravioli) lack much wow factor, many punters don’t think it’s worth the effort.
