Apparently the first Indian restaurant in the UK to bring over chefs from the subcontinent, the Red Fort has become a byword for ‘meticulous’ & ‘fragrant’ Mughal cuisine since launching in Soho some 30 years ago. It certainly looks elegant, with white linen on tables at the rear, & moody photos of the eponymous 18th-century military complex. The front half has recently been designated the Brasserie at the Red Fort, serving small plates of chaat & kebabs (from £4.25) & large helpings of chicken shashlik, prawn malai & grilled sea bass (£8.50-13.50), which should offset complaints about ‘extortionate’ prices. Meanwhile, the ‘superb’ carte continues, offering Hyderabadi bhuna gosht (with Herdwick lamb), roast rabbit with mustard & fennel, & tandoori Gressingham duck breast – ‘well worth the extra pounds’. The wine list has some serious drinking from the big-name French regions.
