Now in its fifth decade, Ravello isn’t about to change its way of doing things one jot – & that suits its regulars just fine. Pieces of art evoking southern Italy enliven the rather plain decor, & the menu doesn’t make any concessions to highfalutin modern cuisine, with three set menus & stalwarts such as breaded veal escalope or Italian sausages with parmesan mash taking pride of place – plus the odd seasonal truffle or game bird. Starters bring carpaccio of beef with wild mushrooms or goats’ cheese tartlets with onion marmalade, while desserts are wheeled around on a little wooden trolley – remember that wonderful Victoria Wood sketch? The Italian-leaning wine list covers most of the country, with plenty of choice under £25, including a Valpolicella Ripasso from Veneto.
