Square Meal review of Quilon: ? Write your own review

As well as putting Quilon on the gastronomic map with his Michelin-starred take on south Indian coastal cuisine, executive chef Sriram Aylur also wows the business crowd with his ‘divine’ blending of western culinary technique with eastern flavours. Specialising in seafood from the Indian states of Kerala, Goa & Karnataka, the kitchen delivers top-drawer char-grilled prawns with ground Byadgi chillis, & marinated tilapia fillet wrapped in banana leaf. Starters of seared scallops with coriander, raw mango & almond, & slow-roasted lamb shanks tinged with fennel & mint are equally impressive, as are the delectable breads. Quilon’s repertoire also extends to a decent line-up of exciting vegetarian dishes, including mango curry, & coconut with asparagus & beans. The set lunch menu is a comparative snip at £20 for three courses. Overall, the food is a ‘delight to the eye & the tongue’, although some find the hotel-like dining room underwhelming.

I have been to Quilon on several occasions, both personal and business, and always had a wonderful experience.

the team as well as the chef are very good and on all occassions been very friendly.

as there are so many excellant items to choose from on the menu we often just send a note to the chef and ask him if he is preparing any specials on the night. if not just ask him to use his imagination and prepare something which saves you a lot of plate envy on the night!

have been here with 20+ as well as 2 people and guests were always impressed at the end of the evening.

Quilon is an excellant restaurant with a neutral decor and very attentive service. the food is excellant and wines suggested by the sommelier are simply delicious.

I will go back as often as I can and would recommend it to anyone.

On my recent and second visit to Quilon, I was quickly reminded of why it had taken so long to come back. This is not to say that the experience was a negative one, but neither was it overly positive. Quilon seems to be one of these in between restaurants – the one that is never raved about nor complained about. It does well, with the custom it receives but doesn't seem to push for more. For this reason it is a real puzzle to me as to why or how it received its Michelin star back in 2008. Having visited it last weekend, the dishes, service and atmosphere were still as so-so as they were on my first visit over a year ago.

To briefly explain…service is acceptable but never appears overly friendly, helpful or approachable. Except right at the end where a suited man inquires as a formality, if all was to your liking. Well it may not have been, but there's no point quibbling about it right at the end of the meal. Food is thoughtful, well constructed and covers the south Indian region justifiably with a good selection of veg, fish and meat dishes. But these are not in any way unique to the venue and dishes of similar ilk can be found in Indian restaurants of similar themes all over London. Lastly atmosphere, well there is very little to say about the dull bland and uninspiring interiors which together with the cold air conditioning that froze me and my fellow diners, proves to add very little warmth to the whole experience.

It's a tricky one. I don't dislike Quilon but I don't love it. Nothing about it screams ‘come back for more’ and nothing of the evening remains vividly in your mind the following day. It is at best a find for those seeking quiet business lunch venues and for tourists of the Crowne Plaza to have dinner on their doorstep, unfortunately I'm neither.

There's no better start to a week at work than a nice lunch out, although some questioned my choice of Indian in such hot weather. Thankfully the restaurant is very spacious and well air conditioned so the tropical heat wave we are having meant nothing. Admittedly being a Monday lunch time the restaurant was quite quiet but I'd put this down to the day and not a lack of popularity. As mentioned the restaurant is very spacious – from where I was sat the owners could easily have pushed another table in but a big thumbs up for the fact they don't – there's nothing worse than having to sit too close to others and hearing their business secrets while they hear yours. It's easy to see how Quilon achieved their Michelin star and the food is outstanding, Crab cakes with ginger and curry leaves and green chillies were delicious as was the pistachio lamb shank curry – very soft and tender and well spiced. Being a greedy chap I also sampled some of the lobster with mango and ginger which again was fab. Although the dishes came quite spicy I found they were not overpowering which is great as often you find your tongue numb from some dishes and unable to enjoy the taste of other dishes. It seems very popular with the locals for a business lunch but I've vowed to return soon for a dinner – prices can come across as higher than normal but as with everything in this world you do have to pay for quality and Quilon has it in abundance. A set lunch offer of £20 for 3 courses does make it affordable for all and I'd suggest you all try!
