With wooden pews & trestle tables set on black-&-white floor tiles & with jellied eels firmly affixed to the menu, this London institution is something of a Victorian time warp. A former working man’s caff, it is famous for utilitarian food – think corned beef hash, pie & mash & potted shrimps – but it also has steak tartare, caviar & lobster for anyone wanting to go up-market. It may be unchallenging stuff but the hearty fare has many fans, rugby hero Martin Johnson & fashion icon Alexander McQueen among them.
