Square Meal review of Quaglino's: ? Write your review

Light projections in the bar, McQueens flower displays & newly commissioned ‘wall drawings’ by Brit artist Hugo Dalton all announce that Quaglino’s is back. The fantastic sweeping space, whopping crustacea bar, glamorously clad greeters & occasional ‘oyster girls’ create bags of ‘energy & atmosphere’. Service is attentive, & a new Belgian-born chef turns out food that matches the venue’s status as brasserie royalty. The latest menu reintroduces dishes from the launch back in 1993: wild mushrooms on sourdough; rabbit leg with prosciutto, butternut squash & herbs; & lobster & shellfish pie. Prices are fair, especially the fixed-price dinner (£19.50 for three courses). Arrive early to stake your claim in the cocktail bar (see separate review) that overlooks the vast underground dining floor – reached down that famous staircase. Quag’s is as gloriously frenetic as the Gare du Nord during the rush hour, so find somewhere else for that romantic first date.

We went here for a birthday celebration on Saturday night and had a lovely time. The bar was buzzy, the singer was great and the staff attentive. We then descended the stairs to the restaurant and again had good service, the food was disappointing; mushy mussels and undercooked meringue, but it was at the end of the meal when we were accused of not leaving a tip! that the evening could well have turned sour. Having left a generous tip already, to be asked again was outrageous! unfortunately the gentleman with us put his hand in his pocket so as not to cause a fuss in front of the birthday girl! – shame on you Quaglino's

I had my birthday meal in here last year on a Saturday night, there were 6 of us and to be honest I was really disappointed, the food is nice and the staff were friendly but I just felt like we were in a great big fish bowl.
You have to go down steep stairs to get to the main dining room and in heels this was a slow process.
We were sat in the middle of the room and we all felt like we were being over listened and looked at for the whole meal. I had wanted to eat here since the late 90's at the height of its fame, but I think it needs a re-vamp as it is a little tired now and not as glamorous as I was expecting.

My recent visit to Quaglino's where I celebrated a friend's birthday was quite an enjoyable visit. The food we both thought was very tasty indeed and the portion sizes more than adequate for an upmarket bistro type of restaurant.

My friend was almost salivating over her rib of beef in an orange and olive sauce, something she was slightly dubious of ordering beforehand and the suculancy of it was indescribable, absolutely perfect. I chose the Quaglino's signature burger which was also very tasty. The only minor gripe I had with this dish was that I'm pretty sure that the burger bun itself had been previously frozen which for me was quite disappointing, surely at 13 pounds I deserved a fresh bun. Still, not the end of the world when the remainder of the meal was wonderful.

Oh the desserts, absolute heaven. I had the Autumn Berry Pavlova which was absolutely delicious, and I have to say it was the largest dessert I have ever been presented with. I am a real dessert person but sadly even I was forced to leave a little. My friend's Creme Brule was also very generous and tasted beautiful.

After receiving the bill, which again I thought was very reasonable indeed taking into account that we each had three courses with wine and water, I was slightly miffed that our server either forgot to bring me my change or just assumed that I was happy for the restaurant to keep it. I had every intention of tipping… More

What a disappointment. I last came here 10 years ago and had a very fond memory. It is now a shadow of its former self. The food is average – a sort of upmarket Strada. I started with the goats cheese tart – one of the recommended options – but it was a quiche with which M&S would have done better. The steak I had as a main was passable but at £30 I would have expected something more than a slab of meat and some tired leaves. The rest of my party had similarly disappointing experiences. The service was abysmal – slow and disinterested. A great room but let down by the kitchen and the staff. Oh and why the need to have a loud band in an echoey space? We couldn't hear ourselves think although at least it took our minds off the cuisine…

Beautiful space but Quaglino's clearly screams of a restaurant that is past its prime. Out of about 10 dishes we ordered, they had run out of at least 5! And this was a Friday night. I was not impressed. Even when our second food choices arrived, they were lacking in flavour and boring.

If it were not for the company this would have been a terribly dismal evening. It started off well with a stylish reception lounge and a sax/piano combo in perfect sync. The eastern European staff were bright breezy and very efficient. This however was as good as it got!

The carpaccio was tasteless, all the more irksome as I was sitting next to a Spanish officiando revelling in their mastery of the breeding and butchery of cows and bulls.

The liver was off the menu and so I was pointed to all the cuts of meat that were related as if that would sooth the disappointment. Liver and steak a strikingly similar choice! I opted for the monkfish, which was tougher than a sailors hands.

The lemon tart should have been a banker but they forgot the lemon! All in all a very poor!
