Square Meal Review of La Porte des Indes ?

The term ‘Tardis’ springs to mind – alongside fantastical, exuberant & OTT – when describing this 300-cover Indian pleasure dome just off Oxford Street. Customers enter through a relatively small ground-floor lobby, & a member of staff in flowing gear leads everyone past carved screens & water features to a double-height dining room crammed with greenery & artefacts. A celebration of the culinary styles that grew out of French colonisation, the menu is big on specialities from Pondicherry, such as a spiced seafood cassoulet or Creole duck breast with a spiced tamarind sauce. But there is also plenty to satisfy those who would rather stay in the more familiar world of tandoori grills, biryanis & chicken tikka masala. Staff are willing, & fixed-prices lunches are an attractive proposition. ‘An absolute treat.’

I am not the kind of person who is very easily impressed particularly when it comes to food or dining experiences. I am married to a Singaporean lady of Malay descent who loves to cook and does it marvellously well. Food and cooking runs in the family. In addition to that I travel frequently abroad and have the opportunity to taste various types of foods, from typical Portuguese to the spiced oriental cuisine across the continent.
But I admit that the dining experience me and my family had last Sunday when we went to La Porte des Indes was absolutely fantastic and one that really surprised me immensely. The great experience wasn’t simply limited to food or just the ambience but it stretched to every single aspect of a good dining out moment.
From the very moment we walked in and were greeted by extremely friendly staff to the time we left we experienced what could only be described as an absolute treat.
We went for a Sunday brunch and had taken our three year old with us. The friendliness of the staff and attention to detail in every aspect was absolutely phenomenal.
The food was fantastic and spiced to the right amount. The variety we were offered to choose from as it was an open buffet was absolutely immense. I found the prices very reasonable for the class and quality of food and ambience offered here.
Whether you are a vegetarian or a non vegetarian you just cannot go wrong with the variety of food they offer here. I was spoilt for choices. The Indian sweets for dessert that they had on offer were absolutely tasty. I love halwas and they were truly delicious.
This is a place I would strongly recommend to anyone who enjoys good food and would like to taste some of the phenomenal dishes prepared with great attention to detail catered for every palate. Be it as a family or just a stopover or even to grab a meal with friends I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough. The ambience and interior decor makes it all a wonderful experience topped up with a fantastic and attentive service from the staff in every aspect.
