Square Meal review of Pomegranates: ? Write your review

Pomegranates hasn’t changed much since 1974, when it first introduced London to its international menu. The interior is now looking tired, but the food remains as thrilling as ever. The menu travels the globe, offering dishes from Denmark (pickled herring), China (Szechuan lamb) or Jamaica (curried goat), before arriving back in Blighty (treacle tart). It’s not cheap & the cover charge is a 70s hangover that we could definitely do without – even though this one includes crudités, aïoli & homemade bread – but the moneyed Westminster types who pack the place out nightly don’t seem to mind. It is, after all, a classic.

I have eaten in Pomegranates several times over the past seven years, including twice in October 2008. I have never experienced the service described by NikD. Patrick has always been courteous and polite. He likes to take the order himself but after that he leaves you in peace unless you ask him over. I have found it the perfect place for a private and intimate chat. The staff are efficient and the food is good. I also think that Pomegranates serves the best Bloody Mary in London.

I visited this restaurant in Oct 2008 with a group of 15 and was meet by one of the rudest, most aggressive and patronising owner/managers I have ever come across. Despite the food being okay and his staff trying their hardest to make up for the lack of atmosphere and stuffy decor, his overbearing presence spoiled what may have otherwise been a good, if expensive, night.

Avoid at all costs.
