Launched in 1998 by cocktail hero Dick Bradsell, but now part of Jonathan Downey’s portfolio (Milk & Honey, Giant Robot), The Player is a Soho institution. Membership ensures entry, but you may have what it takes to negotiate the door at this disco-style late-night drinking legend colonised by fashion freaks, media geeks, bloggers and blaggers. Order a boilermaker (Black Isle Goldeneye pale ale and Cazadores Reposado Tequila) or discover drinks invented by Player associate and New York shaker Dale DeGroff – perhaps big appleberry or Mexican breakfast (Martell VSOP, berries, apple juice and lemon). Otherwise, plump for a turbo-charged classic such as a Plantation rum swizzle to go with a hearty slider courtesy of foodie provider Breddo’s Tacos. Note that The Player nominally becomes ‘members only’ after 11pm.
