This ‘enjoyable & memorable’ restaurant is a place to relax & enjoy unfussy cooking – unlike the bar, it’s rarely packed, & there’s no table turning, so you can take your time. The vibrant decor (all pale woods & bold patterned upholstery) is typical of the Firmdale hotel brand, while a buzz from the adjoining bar adds some extra oomph. The cooking mixes seasonal British ingredients with eclectic influences, from a delicate crab salad to pot-roast chicken with ceps, pancetta & butternut squash or expertly judged rack of lamb with a seared crust & ruby-red middle. Finish with an elegant fruit tart or one of the signature sundaes, such as a cute take on Eton mess. Prices are pitched at wealthy hotel guests & those on expenses, but there’s a good-value set menu for everyday outings.
