Square Meal Review of The Orangery ?

A beautiful spot for lunch or coffee in the heart of Kensington Gardens, The Orangery is probably worth a visit for its location alone – particularly on a warm spring day. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let plenty of light into the smart, white-painted room, which gets its fill of local yummy mummies & tourists. Lunch is a very English affair with sandwiches, scones & cakes on trolleys, while more substantial offerings might include smoked haddock fishcakes or a seasonal savoury tart with a light salad. Afternoon tea is also available for considerably less than you’d pay for a top hotel blowout. In summer, bag a table on the shady veranda (away from the kids’ buggies if possible) & survey the gardens below as you sip tea or a glass of something bubbly.

The Orangery is one of my favourite places for tea in summertime. Such a lovely ambiance! I don't think anybody really goes for the food, but more the setting. Food, though is fine, with a selection of cakes, scones & other tea-time choices, as well as lunch food.

With Kensington Palace a stone's throw away, you're well away from the bustle of London. I like the whiteness of the interior & how family friendly it is.

You'll find many families gathering here – with buggies lined up out front sometimes. Doesn't detract from the experience, a lovely time & a good choice for the weekend.

This is fine if you are on a budget and haven't booked anywhere, but still want to try afternoon tea. we simply went there on a Sunday afternoon and had to wait just about 20 minutes for a table.

The service was good. We ordered scones which were very good, but when the tea came, we were given TEABAGS – unforgivable I think for a place doing afternoon tea. This is not a little cafe on the corner after all!!!

The overall experience was ok, but if you really want to do afternoon tea in style, then you can't beat the big hotels – like the Ritz. Of course you will pay much more for the experience, but it's worth it in my opinion. It's quite “casual” at the orangery.

The Orangery is of course in the lovely setting of Kensington gardens, so it's convenient to visit while you're there.
