Square Meal review of The Orangery: ? Write your review

As befits its regal setting within Kensington Palace, The Orangery is a beauty. Its windows are almost impossibly tall, with nothing but a stylish summer terrace & pure white umbrellas separating the lofty interior from the lush green lawns beyond. It’s a place that lends brightness to the gloomiest of days, so it’s a shame the food doesn’t quite live up to the surroundings. Sure, the kitchen can rustle up a decent salad & serve creditable breakfasts, but given that the main attraction here is afternoon tea, too many guests leave disappointed. As one reader points out, the use of tea bags instead of loose leaves is ‘unacceptable’ &, while the scones are good, the sandwich selection often seems stingy & bland. In any other location, people would vote with their feet but, despite its shortcomings, The Orangery is always busy.

This is fine if you are on a budget and haven't booked anywhere, but still want to try afternoon tea. we simply went there on a Sunday afternoon and had to wait just about 20 minutes for a table.

The service was good. We ordered scones which were very good, but when the tea came, we were given TEABAGS – unforgivable I think for a place doing afternoon tea. This is not a little cafe on the corner after all!!!

The overall experience was ok, but if you really want to do afternoon tea in style, then you can't beat the big hotels – like the Ritz. Of course you will pay much more for the experience, but it's worth it in my opinion. It's quite “casual” at the orangery.

The Orangery is of course in the lovely setting of Kensington gardens, so it's convenient to visit while you're there.
