Liberties are taken with tradition here: the 50s-style decor is sharp & almost monochrome rather than cosy, traditional Italian, & the menu follows suit, dishing up very un-Italian offerings among the classics. There’s calamari fritti or Caesar salad to start, with a tiger prawn & dill risotto or perhaps fishcakes with garlic, chilli & herbs to follow. More substantial meat or fish mains include steaks, lamb shank & swordfish, though for some it’s the simpler items that work best. Pizzas range from traditional margherita to the funkier Portofino with tomato, smoked mozzarella, spicy prawns & rocket. There’s plenty of affordable glugging on the all-Italian wine list, though the red wine spritzers might raise traditional eyebrows. Service is good, the atmosphere informal.
