Square Meal Review of Mr Wing ?

An ‘Earls Court institution’, Mr Wing is capable of delivering a ‘great night out, with great service & superb food’, according to one regular. It’s certainly one of a kind, with a jazz pianist accompanying proceedings as diners nibble their way through assorted Chinese standards under the blue glow of fish tanks. The food may not be the most adventurous in town, but it certainly hits the spot – from aromatic duck with ‘insanely’ crispy skin to salt & pepper squid or juicy pork ribs. A small dim sum selection & an irreverent mixture of Szechuan & Cantonese styles ensures most palates are catered for. Set menus (from £22 to £45) take in most of the chef’s recommendations, including sweet & sour sea-bass fillets or stir-fried rib-eye with ‘tao peng’ sauce.

The best thing about this restaurant is the food. Mr Wing delivers the very traditional favourite Chinese recipes, but cooked more healthily and without all the extra MSG. I have taken several lots of frends here and every time they have commented on how great the food is compared to other Chinese restaurants (much better than anywhere in China Town, London). I find it a little pricey, but don't mind paying with the quality of food that is presented every time. On a Saturday night they usually have a pianist or other musician which adds to the unique atmosphere. There are several great areas of the restaurant to sit in – my favourite being next to the bright blue fish tanks, but there are also cute little alcoves suitable for a group. I defiantely reccommend giving this restaurant a chance if you love your traditional chinese but don't want to walk out feeling horrible like you've had too much MSG. A nice modern Chinese restaurant but with traditional flavours.

Mr Wing is an Earls Court institution which has never failed to deliver on a great night out. Such classics as crispy duck and Singapore noodles are always spot on. Yes, the wine list could be broader but from experience that has never got in the way.
For a good night out, great service and superb food Mr Wing should be given the benefit of the doubt as it won't let you you down and most importantly it is the sort of restaurant you will return to time and time again.

To be perfectly honest, I visited Mr Wing thinking the worst. Being told on arrival that our table was downstairs by the Jazz pianist, did little to convince me otherwise. We were seated next to a fish tank and the music blared away. To my surprise, the music was actually really good and more importantly so was the service and the food. Delicious salt and pepper squid, juicy sweet pork ribs with tender meat that just fell of the bone, all absolutely delicious. Singapore noodles were gently spiced and beautifully prepared with fresh components. A wonderful crispy duck was just as it should be, insanely crispy of the outside with plenty of meaty duck and feather-light pancakes. This wouldn't have been top of my list of Chinese restaurants to visit… Hell, it wouldn't have even been ON my list, but it delivered on several accounts and as a result, a great meal was had by all.
