Square Meal review of Momo: ? Write your own review

Open since 1997, Momo has outlived the original It-crowd, but only the most cynical hipster could find this place naff. While the venue is undeniably touristy, its infectiously upbeat party atmosphere is hard to resist. The decor is reminiscent of the high-end riad restaurants of Marrakech – all wooden fretwork, deep-red rugs, low seating & even lower lighting – & the food is well-rendered & deliberately pitched at western sensibilities. A sweet & savoury pastilla (sugar-dusted pastry deep-filled with gamey pigeon) might be followed by couscous mechoui (lamb shoulder slow-roasted to toothsome succulence falling off the bone into the lightest couscous imaginable). Only the largest appetites will make it to desserts such as dark chocolate macaroons; better, perhaps, to order a cleansing mint tea. Alternatively, graze on Arabic tapas in the basement Kemia bar while knocking back Momo specials (mojito-like house cocktails).

I would not recommend momo's to anybody. We were not expecting anything too special, but we ended up wishing that we had not wasted our time. The service was so bad it was beyond a joke. The food was very badly prepared and ill considered, in fact, it was no better than I have eaten in service station buffets on the motorway. The atmosphere was not dissimilar to motorway service stations either, with awful intruding music and an overall feeling of dirt. I was disappointed in every respect. If you want to eat in London you would be better off at wimpy. zero stars. the owners of this establishment need to take a hard look at their business because it seems like it has come to a very unsatisfactory, substandard ending.

I've been a few times over the years and decided to take a friend from out of town here. The food was very average. The saving graces were (a) the atmosphere; and (b) the service which whilst not great, was charming. One thing to bear in mind, the main couscous courses are huge!

the ambience is amazing but beware this central london outfit has built a name equated with trend and cool and as a result, one feels a lot of their decisions are commercially driven eg exorbitant prices, tables v close to each other, time limits on tables, unable to get mint tea in bar in evening. I for one will be saving my pennies to go somewhere more homely, relaxed and sacrifice style!

charming place but inexusably expensive for frankly very basic moroccan food that you could make just as well at home with a Claudia Roden cookbook. For this kind of money is it really acceptable that every piece of crockery we ate off be THAT chipped? And is it ok to be THAT close to other punters such that you are literally shoulder to shoulder. Not really my idea of a top end restaurant, despite the high price tag and pleasant service. Dont get me wrong, the food is good, just terribly terribly overpriced. Goto Sidi Maarouf on Edgware Road instead and save yourself some money. Sidi's service borders on terrible but the place is decorative, the food is good and half the price of Momos and they have unchipped crockery at least!

If you are looking for a tourist priced moroccan with poor quality wines at overrated prices this is the place for you.
