Meson Don Felipe opened in an era when tapas was a novelty, & soon became popular thanks to the quality of its food, its all-Spanish wine list & the live guitar music that provided accompaniment for evening meals. These days it’s more of a tired cliche. The guitarist may play on, but the wine list is no longer novel & the food is uninspired. Where once the patatas bravas, chorizo cooked in wine, gambas al ajillo & tortilla were vibrant reasons to endure a queue & get shoehorned into one of the tiny tables around the central bar, those classic dishes are now lacklustre & insipid. London now boasts many great tapas restaurants – Meson Don Felipe is no longer among them.
