Square Meal Review of Le Mercury ?

‘Perfectly executed French food at incredible prices’ is the satisfied report from one of many customers who have frequented this unpretentious bistro since 1985. Though a little worn around the edges, the ground floor dining room with its terracotta flooring & intimate tables for two retains a faded romance, & is the top pick of rooms on three ascending levels. Those unbelievably low prices are £4.45 for starters, £9.95 for mains & £3.45 for desserts. You don’t have to eat like a peasant either; dine in royal style on crayfish & lobster ravioli with spinach & shellfish sauce, followed by roast saddle of lamb with grilled courgettes & rosemary jus, then crème brûlée or ripe French cheeses. Les vins blancs et rouges are an international affair, & to finish there’s a generous selection of liqueur coffees.

Samphire and Salsify :: Le Mercury, Islington

I’d never heard of Le Mercury (a French restaurant in Islington) until a friend suggested it for a cheap and cheerful dinner. It’s been going strong for nearly thirty years and it’s so popular they’ve even opened a second restaurant down the road, Le Mercury Deuxieme, which serves exactly the same menu. It was packed when we arrived so we were seated in the upstairs dining room. It was very….quaint. The candlelit tables were tightly packed together and topped with paper tablecloths and napkins...

  2. Type “cheap French restaurant Angel” into Google and Le Mercury tops the results. Even amongst the myriad restaurants of bustling Upper Street, it is something of an institution – so much so that about a year ago it opened a second branch, Le Mercury (deuxième), with an identical menu just a few doors down the road from the original. My dining partner and I were, naturally, curious to see whether Le Mercury could live up to the hype and, whatever our experience, I was keen to put my own spin on it in a restaurant review. Having called to book a table on a Saturday morning for dinner that same night, I was told that the original restaurant was full, but they could just squeeze us in at the deuxième. Carpaccio de Boeuf The menu at Le Mercury is short and simple: all starters are priced at £4.45, all mains at £9.95, sides at £1.95 and desserts at £3.45, so it seems a sin to have anything less than the full three courses...
