Banishing stuffy memories of Memories, The Langham hotel's former dining room, its new restaurant combines the talents of London's foremost restaurant designer, David Collins, with the chef who was at the forefront of introducing Londoners to grazing meals, Andrew Turner. Collins's interior is his signature update of old-school hotel glamour – wood panelling, clever lighting & candy-coloured leather seating, as well as a new street entrance – while Turner has lost none of his knack for turning out beautifully presented, appetiser-sized dishes. Highlights include the light earthiness of pumpkin soup with ceps, quail egg & slices of fresh truffle, the seaside zip of crab & avocado with lemon myrtle, & a standout dish of superbly rich Devonshire lamb cutlet with confit mutton breast, artichokes & jus gras. If eating five to eight doll-size dishes sounds too dainty, many are available full-size on the a la carte. Service is notably friendly for a five-star hotel, while tall windows make this an appealing breakfast venue.

Wine List: This is a wonderful wine list. Too many hotel restaurants apply painful margins and treat anyone with £30 to spend as an afterthought. Not so The Landau. Pricing is restrained and there is a wealth of interesting wine under £30 to choose from. Each section comes with well-written notes, while the wine buyer has persuaded some of the world’s great vignerons to release rare old vintages and provide more words of wisdom. Best Buy White La Roche Pouilly-Fuissé 2004, Bret Brothers, Mâconnais, Burgundy, France, £46. Best Buy Red Novas Syrah-Mourvèdre 2004, Colchagua, Chile, £29.

Chef: Andrew Turner

The Landau’s Chef -

Andrew Turner returned to London at the end of 2007 after a spell as executive head chef of Pennyhill Park in Surrey. He launched The Landau restaurant at The Langham hotel, bringing his trademark ‘grazing’ concept, which he first introduced at restaurant 1837 at Brown’s hotel, where he was awarded four AA rosettes, before taking it to restaurant 1880 at the Bentley Kempinski. Turner’s formative years in the kitchen were spent with Albert Roux & Anton Edelmann, but he really started to raise his own profile while working at The Berkeley hotel. He’s a regular on the small screen with appearances on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, Yes Chef & BBC Food Poker.

Agree with RR Gill's comments below. This is an outstanding example of how a restaurant should be run. The absence of a Michelin star which I expect will be in the post motivates the everyone from the Kitchen to front of house to work very hard to make this a success. The Landau is a foodie's paradise with some incredibly inventive and complex cooking designed to surprise even the most experienced palate. Have visited several times and never been dissapointed. Highly reccomended.

Having always enjoyed Andrew Turners cooking at the Bentley I knew I was in for a treat when I tried the Landau. I wasn't disappointed and had lunch there a few weeks ago. Apart from seamless service the food was excellent – presentation immaculate and the fillet of beef I had was the most tender I have ever tasted. Unfortunately I had to slightly rush my lunch due to work but intend to go back for dinner very soon. This restaurant deserves to be very successful.
