Square Meal Review of Matsuri ?

Business types and wealthy Russian tourists unite across the table at Matsuri, as chefs toss fried rice, de-shell lobsters and even flambé ice cream on the restaurant’s famous flat-top grills. This St James’s stalwart has always championed resolutely traditional Japanese cuisine but was starting to garner lukewarm reports from readers – although we reckon some contemporary refurb work and a few menu tweaks make it worth another visit. Set deals ensure easy ordering, but it pays to go for the carte – ask the capable staff for assistance. Ginger-spiked black cod paired with dry-aged Angus beef fillet makes for upmarket surf and turf, tuna sushi is soft and rich, and Matsuri rolls liven things up with spicy heat. If beef’s your bag, fat-marbled Wagyu is also on the menu, though it doesn’t come cheap. Digest the protein – and the bill – with a shot of Japanese whisky.

Rents are among the highest in London (and therefore the world). Get the picture? St James oozes class, style and old money. And it’s home to fabulous Matsuri.   2. What's the one thing about Japanese food that confuses you the most? For me it's just about everything. Ingredients I've never heard of, things i never knew you could eat and an endless amount of dishes i cannot pronounce. I've always tried to avoid reviewing sushi restaurant simply because i don't know enough about them to recommend it to you. I know what i like, but not enough to tell if you will - until now. To centre my Japanese culinary journey i couldn't think of a better way than to start off than at Matsuri of St James.   3. The evening kicked off with Michelin star chef Simon hulstone, cooking a simple dish of vegetables and scallops. The marinade was simply soy sauce, saki, mirin, and sesame oil.   4. Michelin star Head Chef Simon Hulstone (usually found at The Elephant in Torquay) donned his apron and got to work on a teppan. Tenderstem broccoli (harvested from his 30+ acre Devonshire farm) and caramelised scallops dressed in a soy, mirin, olive oil and sesame oil sauce were shared amongst all. Appetising and savoury and of course, no need to add salt. Simon spoke of other dishes he cooks often featuring soy as the savoury component, some of which can be found at The Elephant: with chocolate, in soy salted caramel, tarte tatins, cider brandy, even with vodka and beetroot as a marinade for monkfish - I’d eat all of these...
