Square Meal review of Matsuri:
‘Matsuri’ is the Japanese word for festival but to Western eyes there’s little that’s festive about this well-lit but neutrally decorated basement restaurant, attended to by kimono-clad waitresses & a far more traditional proposition than other upscale Japanese such as Sumosan & Nobu Berkeley St nearby. The quality of food, however, will leave an upbeat impression: expertly crafted sushi for purists who don’t want their nigiri mucked about with Western ingredients – expect recherche offerings of conger eel & ark clam alongside tuna & mackerel – plus starters of agedashi tofu & chicken yakitori followed by feather-light tempura, precision-sliced sashimi & a wide range of meat, fish & veg cooked on the teppanyaki griddles set into the tables, from prawns & sirloin steak to luxury items of lobster & Wagyu beef. A series of set menus, ascending in price from £35, offers the highlights.
