Square Meal Review of Mao Tai ?

Despite plying its trade on New King’s Road for almost three decades, ever-evolving Mao Tai remains one of Fulham’s premier venues. These days, it takes the form of a trendy cocktail hangout & chic pan-Asian restaurant complete with goose-feather chandeliers, an ornate model garden & walls daubed in Chinese calligraphy. Chill at the grown-up bar with some dim sum & let charming mixologists take you off-piste from the sizeable cocktail list, or settle down for something more substantial. The menu is huge, but you might consider a chunky tuna roll with pickled ginger & coriander or pomelo & blue crab salad before tackling the unmissable sea bass with dried white miso. The food is backed by a well-versed wine list offering two-dozen bins by the carafe, & there’s plenty of saké, too.

Decent food & service but rip off prices. NOT good VFM. Also heard the same comments from neighbours who, together with us will not return.

This is one of my favourite restaurants for a special occasion. You can dress up a bit without feeling out of place as the glamorous decor goes well with a bit of sparkle. Lovers of asian food will find this place a real treat. We normally end up ordering so many delicious starters (dim sum, pot stickers, salt & pepper squid, grapefruit and crab salad, soft shell crab…) that we are too full to order a main course. On the occasions that we have been more restrained on the starters we have thoroughly enjoyed the main courses as well – especially the fish and seafood, and there are many tasty vegetable side dishes to chose from too (really fresh edamame beans, lotus root, broccoli with some sort of sesame/soy sauce…). Everything served feels fresh with good quality ingredients and some innovative taste combinations; the menu seems to keep some of the favourites but there are often new dished added so the selection never seems dull even if you go there a lot. Service is efficient, quiet and discrete. The bar can get quite lively as the bar staff are normally quite up-beat – great cocktails to start and end a great evening out with!
