Square Meal Review of La Mancha ?

La Mancha’s Don Quixote sculpture has been gracing Putney’s High Street for 20 years: longer than most of its customers have lived in the area. The formula is largely unchanged – a long room dominated by a bar on one side, scattered tables on the other, with an interesting drinks list & a 50-strong menu of tapas & main courses. Try mojama (carpaccio of air-dried tuna with pistachios), albondigas, or chistorra (Basque sausage) with white beans, & add patatas con aïoli for ballast. Head to the back for full meals, where paellas & zarzuelas are specialities, & the repertoire extends to pan-European favourites such as grilled calf’s liver with red onion, sage & balsamic, served with roasted potatoes. As at all good tapas bars, food is generous, freshly prepared & inexpensive.

The place looks awful, both on the outside and on the inside, so I don't know how it manages to get people through the door. But once through the door the food is much better than expected. Perfect for a quick but nice pre- or post-movie meal; a couple of glasses of wine or sherry (very good selection of sherries but quite pricy) and some tapas. Service is fast and efficient, especially if you sit at the bar. We prefer to sit at the bar as the back gets a little cantine like; the decor is quite stale and the lights slightly too bright. The tapas are on the traditional side, so little scope to be adventurous, but on the other hand everything is well-cooked and really tasty.
The decor and the menu could do with a bit of modernization, but then again what they have seems to work so why change it?
