Square Meal Review of City Thai House ?

When it isn’t dispensing pints of Fuller’s London Pride or Timothy Taylor Landlord, the imposing Rising Sun pub also dabbles in Asian cooking. Venture up a winding staircase to reach what one reader calls ‘one of London’s best-kept secrets’ – namely the cheery, pared-back City Thai House dining room. An accomplished kitchen pumps out red & green curries with considerable panache – at prices that are practically unheard of in these parts. In addition, there are spicy soups, satays, & a few more adventurous possibilities to explore – maybe pla lad phrik (crispy salmon topped with diced vegetables in hot chilli & tamarind sauce). Sparkling service adds to the considerable charm of this surprisingly smart bolthole embellished with ornate mirrors & open fireplaces.

Four of us turned up on spec for a Thai and found to our pleasant surprise that the place had turned into an great-value Modern English restaurant “61 above the sun”.

The decor and tableware had an attractively rustic feel. For example, the bread was thickly sliced and served on a wooden board.

The quality of the ingredients and cooking was good and the pricing offered excellent value. In particular, the markup on the wines seemed unusually limited.

The place is new and the staff are clearly trying extra-hard to make their guests welcome and happy. This makes it a delightful time to visit this charming new establishment.

Went recently and were surprised to find it's no longer Thai House but a restaurant known as 61 Carter Lane/Above the Sun serving an excellent menu. With choices like mussel arancini or Oxtail broth to start and Pheasant or Wild Sea Bass and fondant potatoes for mains, I don't recall the desserts. I had the bass and it was perfectly cooked.

They obviously have a talented chef in the kitchen. The waitress told me that the owner also has a nearby coffee shop/sandwich bar called Grace which I checked out recently and was equally impressive.

They have a great wine list but you can also grab a Guinness or whatever form the downstairs pub – which the waitress will bring to you. Winner!

Reckon it's a great option for business lunch or to show off in the evening by knowing a great little place know one else does. Doubt it will remain undercover for long.

We opted for the set lunch menu at just under ten pounds – we had already bought drinks in pub downstairs and were able to bring them into the restaurant. We opted for Pat Thai and Chicken in green curry for main courses -they were delicious. The service was efficient – something you need for a weekday lunch and we were amazed at the quality of the food. We have decided to make this a regular favourite and have now tried the a la carte in the evening which we found we could enjoy more and take time to savour the Thai flavours.

The Thai House Restaurant above the Rising Sun Pub in Carter Lane is one of London's best kept secrets.
This unpretentious restaurant offers freshly cooked Thai food that is a taste sensation. I had the Thom Ka Gai soup as a starter which was excellent. I followed this with Gaeng Deng (Chicken in red curry) .
The whole meal was less than ten pounds excluding wine . The service was friendly knowledgeable and informative. I really struggle to find a criticism of this little gem.
