The frontage may be humble, but venture inside & you find that Malabar Junction is actually rather smart, the palm-fringed dining room brightened by an impressive skylight. The restaurant specialises in the aromatic, gently spiced cooking of southern India. Start with uthappam, an Indian version of pizza, the base made with rice & lentil batter & topped with cheese or masala, then follow with a green chicken masala or Kerala mutton curry. Elsewhere on the menu you’ll find plenty of seafood, fragrant biryanis &, for an absolute bargain, visit at lunchtime when the thali (a platter featuring mini portions of meat & veg curries, plus rice & bread) costs a hard-to-beat £4.99.
