Its look may be traditionally English – strategically placed red runners even turn the white-clothed tables into St George’s crosses – but the formal dining room within The Rubens at the Palace serves surprisingly globe-trotting food. Sure, there are classic dishes (a lovely Beef Wellington among them), but typical meals are just as likely to involve an Asian-spin duck salad with chilli & lime dressing or rich Italian risotto. The cosy, candlelit setting is best enjoyed in the evening, perhaps with port & cheese to finish. Comfortable seats & charming service will help you linger.
