The Langan’s empire has been in business since the 1970s, when its flagship Mayfair brasserie was London’s hottest dining ticket. This outpost on a busy stretch of the Old Brompton Road is the baby of the chain, just 12 years old, but it does a fair job of recreating the faded charm that has made Langan’s such a bankable name. The conservatory-like Terrace Bar at the front is the best choice for a relaxing meal; in fine weather it opens on to the street. The kitchen deals in dyed-in-the-wool brasserie food that runs the gamut from garlicky snails or Gruyère & quince jelly soufflé, via scallops served with buttery leeks & crispy bacon, to apple tart with Calvados sorbet. The ample wine list cements Langan’s reputation for bonhomie, with plenty of choice at prices to suit most pockets. Old-school vintages are bolstered by a smattering of New World varietals.

OK, well I love Odins and have been going there for years and years ! I arranged to meet my wife at this venue last Thursday night as I had to attend professionally at what promised to be a very fractious meeting close by, which I hoped to be able to leave in time for dinner. So I was hoping to go somewhere which would help me leave behind what I expected to be feelings of deep concern and irritation. As can be seen from the rating, LB&G certainly succeeded on all fronts – which is great. Why ? When we arrived, the people in front of house knew that I was a regular at Odins (one tick), we were shown to a well-placed table with an excellent view towards the restaurant and given a glass of champagne (another tick) – which other diners were also offered. What a great way to beat the credit crunch ! Service was ultra-attentive and friendly – though not at all obsequious (tick three) and the food very much in the Langan's mould – tasty, well cooked, not mean and thoroughly enjoyable (tick four). Add to that the Langans ambience of eccelectic largely Edwardian (I think) paintings – my wife and I particularly admired a discreet nude on the Northen wall – and there you have it. A happy ending to a trying day.
