Kulu Kulu Sushi

A pleasingly under-designed kaiten sushi joint, Kulu Kulu has none of the neon & novelty of the big brands. Seats are at the long conveyor belt that snakes around the restaurant. Colour-coded plates at various prices trundle past to the sound of tinny J-pop on the radio. The selection can be a little limited, comprising disappointingly predictable (if fair-quality) choices such as California rolls, salmon or tuna nigiri, & prawn tempura hand rolls. In-the-know regulars go ‘off belt’ for tuna sashimi, turbot & soft-shell crab. Waiting staff hover, but offer minimal intervention. Punters soon learn that green tea is a serve-yourself affair, with teabags in mugs at the back. They also discover that all the sushi accoutrements are provided on the counter, & that the bill may be a while in coming. The maximum stay is 45 minutes at busy times.
