With the American Bar at the Savoy closed for refurbishment until 2009, we wonder whether the well-heeled tourists & social divas who defect to Knight’s will ever be lured back? Stylish, charming & oozing class, the compact cocktail lounge at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand evokes an era when Wallis Simpson (no relation) was the talk of London society. Warm wood, plush velour & a stunning granite-topped art deco bar are right on the money, as are themed cocktails Captured Queen & Grand Master, but the barman will also dispense any classic to order. A dozen wines kick off with claret at £24, Laurent-Perrier Champagne at double that. A short bar menu offers burgers, bangers & mash & a hearty cheese board with quince jelly.
