Relaunched under executive chef Maria Elia, this casual, fashion-label eatery (formerly Joe’s Café) is as deliberately cool as its customers – sleek glamazons in leather trousers & weather-independent sunglasses. Its pared-back, monochrome decor is punctuated by blood-red chairs, vintage Lennon & McCartney photos & groaning bookshelves, but happily this is a study in substance as well as style: Elia blends her el Bulli training with recent experience at the Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room to create surprising & keenly priced dishes. Her signature ‘textures’ (riffs on a particular vegetable) might yield a chilled pea soup, cubes of smooth mousse, a delicate risotto & a mini falafel, while a cheap-as-chips daily menu also road-tests new ideas, such as a Thai-spiced watermelon gazpacho. Service is friendly, if less than speedy – but no one’s in a hurry.
