Square Meal Review of The Ivy ?

‘Still one of the most iconic restaurants in London’, The Ivy works its magic thanks to clubby wood-panelled surrounds, harlequin stained glass and that unmistakable ‘fame factor’. There’s always a frisson of excitement when you scan the room for famous faces, though it’s been ‘somewhat easier’ to get a table since the launch of the members-only club upstairs. It’s also easier to find a favourite dish on the ‘truly fun’ menu, whether you fancy ‘wonderfully rich’ signature shepherd’s pie, exotic Korean spiced prawns or a burger. Our crispy duck salad balanced sweet, salty and savoury flavours to a T, while mildly spiced kolaphur chicken arrived with all the curry-house trimmings. Old-school service hits the mark (free valet parking for diners with a theatre reservation is a nice touch), while the consistently welcoming atmosphere never fails to keep regulars and first-timers happy.

    The Food Judge :: The Ivy. Clinging on.

    I have lived in London for 33 years and I have never, until now, been to The Ivy. So long has it been a part of the restaurant scene that I thought it had been there, in its present form, for decades, but (I was surprised to find) it has only been around in its current incarnation since 1989, courtesy of those masters of the slick and the smooth, Corbin and King. Of course, The Ivy was there long before the Corbin/King rebirth; since 1916, in one form or other, when it was set up as an Italian restaurant by Abel Giandelli. Not that it was called The Ivy then. According to legend, the name came about because an actor overheard Mr Giandelli apologising to a customer over some renovation works. Don’t worry, said the actress, we will always cling to each other, like the ivy. I have no idea as to whether that is an urban myth, but it sounds good and as we can’t check with Abel, it will have to do...

    Sybaricious :: The Ivy

    Now that the bulk of the celebrity throng has drifted on to pastures new many of the regulars at the Ivy are, (how to put it politely?) getting on a little in the tooth- perhaps explaining the preponderance of comfort food. That said, there is always a buzzy atmosphere, even at 5.30pm when the pre theatre crowd are in full swing. The menu also offers a wide variety of options and regularly changes with only a few stalwarts keeping their place on the list. If you want to go with grilled fish and salad, hold the dressing then that's absolutely possible (you'd be an idiot to but if you're that type then you're probably not reading this blog to begin with...) Summer was in evidence only in that beautiful English asparagus can be found featuring on London menus. There can be few things more lovely than the simple delight of the first crop of English asparagus dipped into fresh hollandaise sauce. The Ivy offers a starter portion for £12 which seemed a little steep for a vegetable starter but it was pretty huge, we shared it between 3 as an ample light starter and used the spears to mop up every last drop of smooth hollandaise. Properly delicious...

    Samphire and Salsify :: The Ivy

    “The Ivy is one of London’s most in demand restaurants” says the The Ivy’s website and I’d agree with that – I’ve always found it a bit of an uphill struggle to get a table. But good news!...
