The Gyngleboy

Part of the Davy’s stable, Gyngleboy is an old-fashioned wine bar with sawdust on the floor & dark wooden tables that have seen better days. The menu is more sophisticated than the interior might at first suggest, with sharing plates of hoummos, olives & feta, starters such as chicken liver pate with onion marmalade & mains of dressed Devonshire crab. An express lunch of Alderton ham with piccalilli & potatoes comes with a glass of wine & a coffee to finish & is a snip at £10.95. It’s even better if you can eat it in the private snug at the back, known as the office. In case you were wondering, a ‘gyngleboy’ is a leather bottle or drinking pouch with bells on – now you know.
