Grenadier

The diminutive Grenadier served as an officers’ mess when it was built in 1763. Allegedly, the pub is now haunted by one of its namesakes, a soldier who was beaten to death by his comrades-in-arms when he was caught cheating at cards. Supernatural activity is said to reach a peak in September, which neatly coincides with the tail-end of the tourist season – so you should be able to find yourself a place in the otherwise rammed snug bar, which is suitably decorated with military memorabilia. Your drinking companions are likely to be old-school tweedy types. A good selection of draught ales, wines & (potable) spirits helps maintain the cheery atmosphere. Bloody Marys are a speciality. In addition, you can nibble on a range of snacks at the bar, or opt for a full meal in the small restaurant at the back.
