A listed financial institution dating back to the 1890s, La Grande Marque’s splendidly converted surroundings – retaining neoclassical pillars, marble, ornate plasterwork & wood panelling – demand blue-chip service & bankable wines, which is precisely what you get on a 100-strong list. Lively Argentinian Viognier (£16) mixes with some well-rounded Burgundies – a Volnay premier cru at £65, for example. Canard-Duchene is the house Champagne, but roughly double the price to £60 & Gosset Grand Reserve & Billecart-Salmon Rosé twinkle temptingly. Food is a mix of hot & cold buffet items, chunky sandwiches & fairly routine tapas.
