Square Meal Review of The Goring Dining Room ?

The redoubtable, family-owned Goring has been a hit with the royals for more than a century, but while its thick-carpeted dining room with walnut columns, well-spaced tables and eccentric Swarovski chandeliers is fiercely classic, the menu comes with more than a few modern flourishes. A starter of chicken soup is poured at the table, complete with a soft-cooked egg yolk and an accompanying toasted ham and cheese sandwich, all designed to be eaten together for full effect. And tender, vibrantly pink slices of sirloin steak are matched with a puff pastry-wrapped oxtail ‘bun’ and delicately battered onion rings. More classically, a take on a lobster cocktail, eggs Drumkilbo, is known to have been the Queen Mum’s favourite and is a menu mainstay, as is the grand beef Wellington which circulates the dining room on a silver trolley. Decadent puds and a mix of British and French cheeses make for an elegantly indulgent end note while an 800-strong wine list is laden with special vintages for those prepared to splash out. It doesn’t fare quite so well in the lower price range, but then again that’s not really what The Goring is about. The service, much like the space itself, slick and seamless but never stuffy.

inher30s :: Dining Rooms at the Goring Hotel

If the Queen had a local, this would be it. Classy, elegant and only a stone’s throw from Her Maj. Prior to this day, the only thing I knew about the Goring was that Kate Middleton & co stayed here for her last night as a (relative) pauper prior to her big day. I must admit, the royal connection had me picturing a rather stuffy, old fashioned place but nothing could be further from the truth. The room itself is in shades of white, tables set at a healthy distance apart and the quiet tinkling of china and crystal in the air. A large pink Swarovski chandelier dominates the decor which is otherwise quiet, calm and serene...

samphire and salsify :: The Goring: Afternoon Tea

The Goring hotel will be known to most as the hotel at which Kate Middleton spent her last night as a pauper before marrying Prince Wills. The hotel boasts 5 stars and has been running for over a hundred years continuously by one family (The Gorings) which seems pretty impressive. When my gentleman companion’s lady friend suggested we go for afternoon tea, we needed no convincing...
