Golden Hind

A gem among neighbourhood chippies, the Golden Hind has been doing business since 1914 under a succession of Greek & Italian owners. ‘Good honest English fish & chips’ is the name of the game: choose from eight species of fried or steamed fish (from haddock to halibut) & order a helping of mushy peas & pickled onions on the side. School puds of spotted dick or treacle sponge naturally come with custard, & the decor has a similarly nostalgic feel: the cheery yellow shopfront gives way to a simple interior of black & white chequered floor tiles & whitewashed walls, with salt & vinegar on every table. Sadly, the original fryer is now used for storing menus, with cooking done in a proper kitchen at the back. Additional seating downstairs suits groups, & there’s a no-corkage BYO policy too.
