Golden Hind

It may not be as grand as Sir Francis Drake’s galleon of the same name, but this no-frills chippy has certainly charted out an impressive reputation for itself. Marylebone’s Golden Hind has been afloat since 1914. Its original art deco fryer now sits at the rear of the cramped, caff-like dining room & is used for storing menus that list various species of fish & chips, plus a few posher plates. Skate, plaice & scampi can be breaded or battered & served with mushy peas, pickled onions, thick-cut chips & a sprinkling of vinegar. Otherwise, plump for cod fishcakes & a Greek salad (a reminder of the current owners’ nationality). Everything is ‘guaranteed to be first-class’, according to one fan. There’s further seating below deck in the basement, & you can bring your own booze – though a nice cuppa is the best thing to drink here.
