Square Meal review of Glasshouse:
Efficient service, a strong wine list, roomy tables & very good food are to be found within the comfort bubble of Kew’s best restaurant, where booking is essential for evenings & weekends. The Glasshouse ably demonstrates the pedigree & know-how it shares with Chez Bruce & La Trompette (see reviews). Its set-priced menu challenges diners to choose among eight starters, maybe including lobster coral spaghetti with morels, asparagus & wild garlic or salad of squab pigeon with balsamic vinegar & deep-fried truffled egg. A superb slow-roast Middle White pork belly with sausage, apple tarte fine, prunes & choucroute or a delicate poached sea bream with scallops, crab, lettuce & samphire demonstrate the intensity & sophistication you expect of classic haute cuisine. Interesting vegetarian options are always present & puds such as pear & almond tart with clotted cream prove to be equally impressive. The floor-to-ceiling windows open up on sunny days, allowing diners to absorb the village atmosphere outside & ensuring that The Glasshouse doesn’t become a hothouse.
Wine List: This list never seems to get the same press as the other restaurants owner Nigel Platts-Martin is involved in, but it is just as brilliant. There are classic aged wines (in particular rare Burgundies), through to eclectic selections from Greece & Slovenia. Mark ups show customary restraint, so that there is huge choice under £30 as well as 32 halves & 21 by the glass. Best Buy White 2002 Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy, Laurent Tribut, Burgundy, France, £45. Best Buy Red 2004 Meandro do Vale Meão, Douro Valley, Portugal, £35. Wine List: Prices have risen but this is still an exceptional list created by a passionate wine lover. There is vast choice under £25, masses by the glass & while you can drink great bottles from the classic areas this is a place to come & discover something from Croatia or unusual Australian producers. BEST BUY WHITE 2005 Oak Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Elgin, South Africa, £25. BEST BUY RED 2002 Majella Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra, South Australia, £43.
